EXUMA, BAHAMAS TRAVEL GUIDE

Turquoise, tranquil and mesmerizing are just a few words to describe Exuma, Bahamas. White houses that appear painted on an aquamarine background, dotted with pops of fuscia, orange and pink from the lush Bougainvillea wrap you in a comfort only found in paradise. Not only is it beautiful, but it is has a very laid back and peaceful atmosphere and is the perfect place to UNPLUG. The people are friendly and the environment is safe. My family and I just spent six days on the breathtaking island, absorbing the crystal blue water and all the picturesque sunrises and sunsets, but before you visit, there are a few things you should know that would help make your stay a little more informed and enjoyable.

First, if you are visiting any time in the near future, you must have your travel health visa approved by the Ministry of Health. Travel Health Visa applications can take 24-48 hours to process and should be completed with adequate lead time. Masks must be worn while in public. All COVID test information you need can be found on this website. If you plan to stay longer than five days, you will have to be COVID tested while on the island. This was a simple and relatively quick procedure. https://travel.gov.bs/

If you are not staying in a resort, the best way around the island is by Jeep or car. The roads in Exuma are well traveled, to say the least, so a Jeep may be the most logical choice. Be sure to rent in advance, as Jeeps are the first to go. Exuma Car Rental is within walking distance of the airport. https://www.exumacarrental.com/

Depending on the type of experience you are looking for, you may opt to stay in a resort versus a more secluded rental home. We rented the Indigo House through VRBO. The Indigo House is located in Farmers Hill, which is about fifteen to twenty minutes from Georgetown. I cannot say enough good things about this house, from the view to the privacy to the property manager/concierge, who is just an email away to answer any questions you have. https://www.indigoexuma.com/

Deciding whether to stay in a rental home or a resort? Just sharing a few things that we experienced and then you can decide what's best for you and the experience you are looking for. Dining out can be a little tricky. Call before you journey out. Some restaurants are closed certain days of the week and also close early. Most everything is closed on Sundays with the exception of restaurants located on the resorts. part of the authentic island experience is dining at one of the many thatch-roofed roadside eateries where you will see locals hanging out and enjoying their favorite spots. There are a few markets to grab groceries if you decide to cook a meal or two at home. However, you must remember, this is a small island and the stores do not have an abundance of food, just the basics. If this seems more challenging, you may opt to stay at one of the resorts on the island where dining and transportation is available right at the property. We found several little gems for dining out. Dress code: Beach casual (anything goes.)

Roadside bakery where locals share their skills. Homemade treats like rum cake and banana bread make this a must-do.

Blu on the Water Restaurant located in Rolle Town is a must. If you time your visit, you will be able to witness the most beautiful sandbar that rivals anything I have seen. With island dishes like lobster and grouper, your eyes and taste buds will be stimulated. https://www.facebook.com/blurestaurantexuma/

Driftwood Cafe & Pizza, located right in the heart of Georgetown, is a pure delight. The small private courtyard adorned with tropical plants and comfy cushions, feels like you are dining on someone's terrace. Portions are small but tasty, well thought out with a lovely presentation. Bakery items are delicious and fresh and the almond milk latte is amazing. Misty our waitress was friendly, courteous and genuine. https://www.facebook.com/driftwoodcafeexuma/

You may plan your stay to just relax, read a book or two, work on your tan and feel the ocean breeze or you may want a little extra adventure. Exuma Watersports offers full and half day tours of the island, snorkeling reefs and blue holes, swimming with pigs, feeding iguana and stingray, visiting small islands, sightseeing, and exploring the beauty. The guides are very knowledge and safety conscious. I highly recommended this tour. If your travel companions are not as adventurous, they can enjoy the day in the covered boat. https://exumawatersports.com/

If an active nightlife is the vacation vibe you are looking for, you may consider splitting your trip between Exuma and Nassau. Nassau is accessible by a three-hour ferry ride, and you get the best of both worlds. Exuma is a sleepy island that tends to get quiet after dark.

If you are looking for a relaxing sunny vacation, the beautiful waters of Exuma may just be calling your name.

Safe travels, Shannon xoxo
