SAND DOLLAR STATEMENT JEWELRY

One of the best things about the beach is the treasures it gives back to us.  If you have ever been beachcombing and have been fortunate enough to find a sand dollar, consider yourself lucky.  These beautiful sea creatures have both religious and mythological legends.

The sand dollar is actually a sea urchin that has washed ashore and has been bleached by the sun.  In turn, they look like a coin.  Legend has it that these tiny creatures represent the story of Christ.  The markings symbolize the birth, crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.   If you examine these sea coins, they have five holes in the sand dollar.  Religious legend tells us that four holes represent the wounds of Christ in His hands and feet when he was nailed to the cross and the fifth hole represents the wound in Christ’s side when he was pierced with the soldier’s spear.

When the sand dollar is broken open, you will find five dove-shaped pieces.  (These are actually the sea urchin’s teeth.)  These doves are said to release goodwill and peace into the world.

Although I didn’t find these beauties on the beach, I have been proudly donning these Mignon Faget Ltd. bronze Sand Dollar Cuff and Sand Dollar Beach Necklace and holding its meaning close to my heart.  Mignon Faget has a wonderful selection of striking sea-related jewelry and gifts, stock the bar items, graduation and Father’s Day gift ideas.
